An Epistemic Free-Riding Problem?

چکیده

An Epistemic Free-Riding Problem? Christian List and Philip Pettit 1 August 2003 Karl Popper noted that, when social scientists are members of the society they study, they may affect that society. If the individuals to whom a theory initially applies come to understand that theory, then this understanding may affect their behaviour in such a way that the theory ceases to be applicable. This may be called the problem of reflexivity. In this paper, we identify such a problem in an apparently unlikely area: in the area of Condorcet’s famous jury theorem. Suppose that each individual member of some decisionmaking body has a greater than 0.5 chance of making a correct judgment, and suppose further that all individuals’ judgments are independent from each other. Then the jury theorem states that the majority will make a correct judgment with a probability approaching 1 as the number of individuals increases. We argue that, if the individuals come to understand the jury theorem, then they may cease to make independent judgments, thereby undermining one of the conditions for the application of the theorem. Specifically, we suggest that the individuals may be faced with a temptation to free-ride on the epistemic efforts of others. We first develop the problem in some detail and then ask whether there are any escape routes that can protect the jury theorem against the effect of reflexivity.

Epistemic Free Riding

In epistemology and philosophy of science there has been a growing interest in group inquiry and ways that it might differ fundamentally from individual inquiry. The interest in this topic is understandable. Science is predominately collaborative work. If we want to understand the epistemic success of science, we need to understand group inquiry and it is an important part of this to learn whet...

Coordination of Information Sharing and Cooperative Advertising in a Decentralized Supply Chain with Competing Retailers Considering Free Riding Behavior

This paper studies a decentralized supply chain in which a manufacturer sells a common generic product through two traditional and online retailers under free riding market. We assume that the traditional retailer provides the value added services but the online retailer does not. Factors such as retail prices, local advertising of the retailers, global advertising of the manufacturer and servi...

A study on “free-riding” traffic problem in routing overlay networks

In this paper, we discuss the “free-riding”traffic problem in routing overlay networks, which is mainly caused by policy mis-match between the overlay routing and the underlay IP routing. We first define the free-riding problem in routing overlay network, and construct mathematical models for the amount of the free-riding traffic. We next present the numerical examples on the effectiveness of t...

Free-Riding in Student Software Development Teams: An Exploratory Study

In the team literature there is much discussion about free-riding as a main obstacle for teams to achieve quality performance. Given its importance to team success, however, empirical study of the free-rider problem has lagged behind the conceptual work. So far, little research has been conducted in field settings to measure the scale of free-riding and investigate how the problem may deteriora...
